Division viol with Acanthus pattern inlay inspired by an original by Barak Norman. I have redesigned the shape to enhance the acoustics of this smaller model bass gamba. The acanthus design was inspired by a viola d’amore by Paul Alletsee, which I redrew for this project. The inlay was created using an intarsia technique called tarsi a incastro which was brought to a high level of perfection by André-Charles Boule, furniture maker to King Louis XIV. It became a very popular decorative style of the late 17th century for both furniture and musical instruments.
